I’ll go ahead admit it: I’m not a Sephora body care shopping guy. Well, I am if I want to maybe get something nice for my wife. But for me? Nah. The men’s body care stuff is a bit lacking; for all the training, the chlorine my days involve, the brands there didn’t really knock down the stuff my body was able to, er, muster. So I did what most guys do: get the strongest sports-oriented bodycare stuff that was out there. Ergo, I smell “sporty.” Great. Not what I want, but it is what it is. It beats the alternative.
Most to all of the male-oriented body care stuff for athletes is just that: too… sporty. The scents are something that are passable to wear to work. But what about when you’re done with your long ride or run and don’t want to smell like a teenage boy overloaded on body spray targeting young males age 16-25, a scent that indicates you’re “in the zone?” That you’ve got “swagger.” Reef scent? Matterhorn scent? What does swagger smell like? Who are they catering to? Certainly not me.
I’m going to assume you’re better than that, too. Perhaps there’s a big date in your future and want to smell a bit more sophisticated? You have a presentation to your boss that you have to nail if you want to lock in the promotion? You want to smell like you came from the spa, not the gym, and definitely not the club.
I’d heard of Jack Black, but considered it among those brands that smell fantastic, with lots of uplifting, refreshing lavenders and juniper berry and rosemary scents, but wouldn’t be up to task. Of course, Jack Black now debuts an athlete-oriented line, called Performance Remedy. And it’s just brilliant.
The Performance Remedy men’s range is wide and varying—and genuine. The first item, in what looks like an oil dispenser: Mr. Fix It, a non-greasy antimicrobial salve containing 55 ppm silver, known to kill bacteria. The fact that Jack Black has a cut and scrape cream designed to stave off stuff like MRSA, E-Coli and staph infections was my first indicator that this was for people that spend their days out in the elements.
It’s just one of a full range, including Dry Down Friction Free Powder (good ‘ol cornstarch with lavender and organic green tea and cucumber), a water-resistant and oil-free (i.e. non pore-clogging) SPF 45 suncreen with 8 percent zinc oxide, and a pain relief cream with MSM. All the stuff we expect to perform our needs for us as true sport-based body care items.
The result is a tangible range of bodycare built for athletes, but delivering natural aromatics that are reserved for boutique brands. Which is because, well, Jack Black is a boutique brand. What’s refreshing (beyond all the sophisticated scents within this line is that nothing is token; the recovery agents like MSM and Arnica are the real deal; the product’s legit.
My favorite items? The Pit Boss anti-perspirant/deodorant and Turbo Wash hair and body cleanser are perfect for getting you from disheveled to professionally presentable in just a few minutes time. Following a hard ride or run, it’s a quick wash and you’re absolutely, professionally and socially presentable, in a flash. I’ve also found the Turbo Wash is also strong enough to knock down the scent of chlorination, which is no mean feat.
The Performance Remedy lineup looks like this:
Mr. Fix It antimicrobial Wound Rescue $20
Jack’s Dry Down Friction-Free Powder $18
Body Rehab Scrub & Muscle Soak $35
Dragon Ice Relief & Recover Balm $22
Pit Boss Antiperspirant & Deodorant $16

Sun Guard SPF 45 Sunscreen $20/4oz tube, $10 /2oz tube
Turbo Wash Hair & Body Cleanser $22
