This simple smoothie uses ingredients you’ve probably got lying around the kitchen … no fancy hempseeds or green powders, here. It’s a great option pre- or post-workout, with the bananas providing much needed potassium and quickly delivered carbs, and the milk providing the protein that keeps you satiated. Cocoa is full of beneficial antioxidants, and flaxmeal boost the drink’s Omega-3 content. Blend up and get moving! (Or recovering.)

Banana Chocolate Smoothie

makes 2

2 frozen bananas

1 cup skim, almond, or soy milk

1 Tbsp flaxmeal

1 Tbsp cocoa powder

1 tsp vanilla extract

Honey, maple syrup, or agave syrup to taste

1. Defrost the bananas on low to medium power in the microwave for 30-40 seconds until only slightly thawed.

2. Blend the bananas with the other ingredients until well mixed. If you like your smoothies icy, add a handful of ice cubes and continue blending. Blend in a natural sweetener if you want a sweeter, more carb-heavy kick.
