Spanish newspapers are reporting that Spanish pro triathlete Virginia Berasategui delivered a positive for an at this point unknown substance following her victory at the Bilbao Triathlon on May 18.
The Spanish language newspaper El Mundo reports that Berasategui, 37, was notified Friday morning of the result, and that she has requested the second sample to be testing for counter-analysis, as confirmed by the newspaper by Berasategui’s father, Javier.
The test was one of six antidoping tests administered following the Bilbao Triathlon.
Attempts by LAVA to contact Berasategui for response have gone unreturned.
The Basque athlete had previously announced on her website her retirement following the 2013 season, indicating her retirement will allow her to pursue interest in fashion, coaching athletes and possibly operating a triathlon retail store.
Berasategui, a resident of Bilbao, Spain has a race resume includes, victory at Ironman Lanzarote in 2004 and 2005, wins at the Wildflower Triathlon in 2009 and 2010, and European Triathlon Union Long Distances World Championship titles in 2003, 2009, 2010, along with a third-place finish at the Hawaii Ironman World Championships in 2009 and a fourth-place finish in 2010.
