US Pro Tri Team Update: Hot Weather and Hot Racing
June was another successful month for us full of breakthroughs. Our first big race was at the Rev 3 half ironman in CT. John, Greg, and Mike made the brave choice to compete in this highly competitive race to help support our team! With one of the richest purses in the sport, it inevitably attracts a field of top tier athletes. This race features a very smooth swim, followed by a hilly bike and run.
John Kenny represented us well by finishing first in the swim, beating world champion and Olympians in his specialty, and eventually finishing a solid 14th. Greg Remaly was well positioned out of the swim but suffered back problems on the bike, and still finished with a strong run. Mike Caiazzo had to pull out with a calf injury, wanting to save it for next weekend. Overall a great weekend though and Ryan had fun showing off our gear at the expo all weekend.
The very next weekend at Eagleman 70.3 in MD Mike and Paul Fritzsche raced this east coast classic, along with the usual very competitive 70.3 professional fields. This course is very flat, but can easily be very windy and hot. Most of the pro field had very slow run splits due to the heat. But Mike and Paul had great races finishing 8th and 12th respectively!
The last weekend of the month we raced at the Philadelphia Tri in PA. Philly is often a big race for us, since it is centrally located for much of our team and a very competitive race. John, Rich Swor, Paul, and Greg raced while Ryan had the booth set up all weekend. Unfortunately this race was turned in to a duathlon due to a tragic drowning accident, so we really were not sure how the day would play out. This would also be particularly tough with two Olympic medalists in the field! Likewise it was insanely hot and humid. The guys really took it in stride though, and surprisingly it was our super swimmer John Kenny who posted the best finish for us in 5th place right behind Olympian Matt Reed. Rich is a great runner and had a very good day to finish 8th, and now that he’s just back from a running injury that should only get better. Greg and Paul finished very close to each other in 11th and 12th, resulting in our entire team finishing in the front half of the pro field! Great weekend for us.
The team also took in another haul of 6 regional wins this month. Paul won the Keystone Warrior Memorial tri in PA, Zach Ruble won the Rock ‘n Roll half ironman in GA as well as the Clermont Sprint Tri in FL, Kevin Lisska won the Enka Lake tri in NC, Nick Waninger won the Muncie duathlon in IN as his first race back from injury, and Rich won Johan’s Trifest in MI.
July will be another busy month for us. There are several big 70.3 races so stop by and say hi!
