On the heels of the IRONMAN Melbourne cancellation, IRONMAN has announced that IRONMAN Cairns will now serve as the 2016 IRONMAN Asia-Pacific Championship. The event, set to be held on June 12, will have a $150,000 prize purse with 75 age group spots for the 2016 Ironman World Championship. The announcement adds that Cairns will bring the Asia-Pacific Championship to their city for the next 3 years.

Boasting one of the most stunning race courses in the world, racers will find themselves swimming at the gateway to the Great Barrier Reef and ride along the iconic Captain Cook highway, making this a true championship course.

Cairns now becomes one of five regional championship races including the North American Championship at IRONMAN Texas, South American Championship at IRONMAN Brazil, African Championship at IRONMAN South Africa and European Championship at IRONMAN Frankfurt.
