Cervelo Leaks P5 Info
The long-awaited successor to the P3 and P4 is coming
December 12, 2011
With the recent launch of several products during the Hawaii Ironman, it’s been a subject of conjecture for the last while: a new Cervelo time trial bike is coming. But it always came with questions. When? Seriously? What’s it called? PX? P5? What’s it going to feature?
Cervelo co-founder Phil White brought an interchangeable “plug-and-play” wind tunnel model to the Hawaii Ironman in October for folks to look at, and certainly questions abounded. The most common question? When were the P3 and P4 going to find their successor?
Looks like that day is coming soon.
Cervelo deftly trickled out a bit of info about the new coming bike to the press today. The name? Yes, it will hierarchically be dubbed the P5. The release states that the P5 is “an aerodynamically optimized design that has been engineered and tested in the wind tunnel to be faster than any bike on the road.” Per form, we will safely assume Cervelo will bring sheafs of data to back that claim when the time comes.
The release also has a bit of vagueness to it with this: “The bike will be made available in two models complete, as well as two frameset models.”
It leads us to wonder whether it’s a simple statement about the fact that the bike will be made available in two specification levels complete.
But the inkling is that Cervelo may be making two iterations of the bike: A time trial version (perhaps with slacker seat angle geometry, perhaps with UCI-limiters with regard to tubeset shapes and depths) and an “unlimited” triathlon version Ths one, absent the UCI’s 3:1 tubeset ratio and seat position limitations, may have a steeper seat angle and could be unencumbered by UCI rules in terms of tubeset location, shape and depth.
The statement did say the bike will have “an easier-to-live-with geometry and position.”
A call to Cervelo for clarification was met with a statement that they couldn’t say anything beyond what was in the release.
What we’ve been given gives us a bit of insight, but still brings forth more questions. Will cables be run internally? Brakes? When will we get the full story? Cervelo says the bike debuts during a January 18 launch. Where that launch will take place is still a question, but you can bet LAVA will be there to tell the story. Stay tuned…
Editors’ Note: A Cervelo dealer sheet we came across stated that not only will the bike have a new braking system, but complete bike iterations put on offer will be a P5 DA and a P5 DA Di2. So perhaps two frame interactions aren’t necessarily in the works. Again, we’ll find out more details shortly.
