Chicked: Active Angelz Apparel
Whoever said athletic gear can’t be cute, chic and functional, hasn’t been introduced to Active Anglez. While they may be new on the scene (this San Diego based brand just launched last year), they are already turning heads. I can say that with confidence as they caught my attention right off the bat. But is it possible that activewear can be this fashionable, yet functional at the same time? Well they certainly passed my test with flying colors!
Sasha Racerback Tri Tank ($99) & Tamara Classic Tri Short ($110)
This tri tank and short are perfect compliments of each other and make for an exquisite training day. I don’t often use the word exquisite when referring to a training day, but this gear is just that. The compression is great, length is just right and the fabric is deceivingly thin and breathable. The tri top is certainly made to fit the female body, so I would recommend ordering a size up.
The material is what surprised me the most with every piece I tried, specifically with the tri tank & short. Whoever said, “Orange is the new black” clearly has not seen Active Angelz Glossy Black apparel. The “wet” look of this fast-drying, compression fabric gives it a make-you-look-twice leather look. Obviously leather looks fabulous on the runway but is probably the last choice when training for an Ironman (could you imagine!?). However, Active Angelz did the impossible and made a tri kit that actually looks chic while maintaining an air of functionality. Upon first feel, I was still not totally convinced it was tri gear, but when you put this fine fabric on, it’s breathable, fast drying and oh-so flattering.
Their shorts are no different. These shorts have everything you want and nothing you don’t (say goodbye to overly sung leg bands!). The 5-inch inseam is the perfect length to stay put, while the bottom bands are somehow (i.e. magic) snug enough to keep them in place while avoiding that ever-so-annoying bulge we’re always battling. The small pockets are just the right size for gels, keys, etc. The fabric is the same as the Tri Top, so my rave review from above applies here as well. These shorts provide just enough compression & comfort, and the wide elastic waistband was one of my favorite features. These shorts are just high waisted enough to stay put, but no too high. The chamois is super soft and offers just enough comfort to confidently keep you going through long rides.
Gabriella Round Neck Tunic Top ($80)
This top comes from their newly introduced Alii Lifestyle line (think stylish yet still uber functional), and their Gabriella Top is to die for! It really is the epitome of a do-it-all lifestyle top. This top will go from morning run to errands to yoga to date night, all in one swift movement. Ok maybe not date night (here’s to hoping!) but my point is, it has everything you want in a day-to-day top. The quick dry fabric works with you while out on a run, yet the glossy “leather” elbow patch makes you look like you’re actually wearing something that didn’t come from your local tri shop. The absolute best part of this top? The fabric! The material rivals that of a cashmere sweater. Soft and fitted, yet breathable. You’d never know the silky soft Italian jersey fabric was dry fitting and offers UV SPF 50 protection.
Simona Crop Pant ($86)
Much like the lifestyle top, these crop pants can do it all. Yoga, grocery store, morning run and everything in between. The glossy black stripe down the side gives them that extra edge of class so you can look put together while trying to fit 30 hours into a 24 hour day. The wide waistband actually does it’s job and keeps these pants in place. Their perfect-fit compression material is just that- a perfect fit. Compression wear doesn’t always offer the most comfortable feel, but these compression pants stem from a high performance power compression fabric. That’s a mouthful, which simply means it’s a luxurious fabric that is pleasing to the skin. And that it is. And Like the Gabriella Top, these pants are impressively quick drying and feature SPF 50 protection.
This apparel is a no brainer for day-to-day active apparel. You’re sure to be seeing Active Angelz apparel everywhere in the near future, including on their athletes of the newly launched Active Angelz & Breakaway Training Women’s Triathlon Team.
