Scotsman Fraser Cartmell and Great Britain’s Yvette Grice each earned their first career Ironman victories Sunday, each taking a very different path to claim it.

In the men’s race, the trio of Scotland’s Fraser Cartmell, Belgian Axel Zeebroek and Briton Stephen Bayliss tore away to a three-man group in the water that held early in the bike. And early on, shedding Zeebroek, it looked like it would be a battle between Cartmell and Bayliss of TeamTBB.

Late in the bike, Team Trek/KSwiss’s Cartmell managed to unhitch Bayliss, and by T2, Cartmell had both the day’s fastest swim and bike a seven-minute buffer for the run.

A solid 2:49:56 marathon sealed the deal for Cartmell for his wire-to-wire win, adding this first Ironman victory to a season record that also includes victories at Ironman 70.3 South Africa and Ironman 70.3 UK.

Bayliss, matching Cartmell’s run pace, simply couldn’t close the gap off the bike and finished second in 8:46:18. Zeebroek took third over three minutes behind Bayliss.

The women’s race saw Great Britain’s Yvette Grice out of Pennington Flash with the lead in 50:03, with Bella Bayliss out of the water on her feet. Grice quickly ceded the race lead to Bayliss, and faded further back into third when Canadian Donna Phelan passed her early in the bike as well.

Bayliss entered T2 with the day’s fastest bike in 5:48, and a healthy 15-minute lead on her TeamTBB teammate Phelan and Grice.

But Grice seized the race firmly once onto the run. A fleet 3:02 marathon quickly took her past Phelan again, as Grice then systematically chipped away at the lead Bayliss amassed. It was late in the run, with about three miles left in the day—that Grice re-assumed the lead she’d earned that morning out of the water, and on the wings of what would be a 3:02 marathon strode away from Bayliss to claim her first Ironman victory.

Bayliss crossed nearly five minutes later for second, while fellow Briton Jo Carritt captured a fading Phelan to grab third.
